CGR30P intermittent fuel flow display

My shop originally fumbled the wiring between my E-I CGR30P engine monitor and the IFD540. After they fixed it, I now get fuel flow and range data... except when I don't. Sometimes power cycling both units solves the problem and sometimes it does not.

Symptoms are that, at startup, the 540 goes to the fuel status page but the fields all show dashes. The CGR30P shows correct data from the GPS (e.g. distance to next waypoint) when this is the case. When the system works normally, at startup the 540 shows fuel data as reported by the CGR. 

In another thread, I saw a mention of boot sequencing for the LIO board and I'm wondering if that's possibly involved here. The shop tells me that this is a known issue, but the guy I talked to didn't say what the nature of the issue was or when/how it might be fixed.
Has anyone run into a similar issue?
