When I first got my 2 IFD440s I had problems with the supplied USB flash drives. I then bought two 8 GB quality flash drives from SONY, which worked perfectly. NOW on some days the #2 IFD440 does not recognize the flash drive and when I last tried I had to reboot the #2 IFD440 four times until it finally mounted the flash drive so I could update the IFD. Anybody had that? What is wrong?

I just use 2GB drives I bought on Amazon in a batch order for less than $3 each. When a drive is no longer recognized by the IFDs (I don't bother to figure out why), I just toss the drive and pull out another one from my desk drawer. It's worked for me since IFDs were first sold (I was an early adopter, and the original Avidyne-labeled stick is long gone). In that period of time, I've re-ordered a new batch, which still has several left. Might need to order again in a year or two. To me, they're like sticks of gum. I'd be curious to know the technical reasons why drives don't work indefinitely, and it is a little annoying that they don't. But it's not a big enough concern to keep me up at night. I just roll with batch orders.

Of course, no problem with buying new one every now and then. BUT: I drive to the airport, try to update the IFD - and if it doesn't work I have to call Jeppesen to rest my account so I can try again ... THAT'S what's bothering me, not ordering some flash drives ...

My 440 almost never recognizes that an update drive is present upon startup be it a navdata update or a software update, my neighbor has same issue. Both of us are able to manually force the updates though.

It would be great to learn HOW you "force the update".

I format my all my flash drives before downloading data. Always. Makes no difference in this case.

Yes, I reformat the drives after each update has been accomplished. Every download from Jepp goes onto a newly-formatted drive.

It's supposed to boot up directly into maintenance mode when it detects a usb drive on start up. When it doesn't, leave the thumb drive in and tap AUX, SYS and then tap the status software button twice, just below that button you'll see update databases. When you hit that you should see a select all button and hit that (assuming you ONLY have the newest database on the thumb drive). Then hit proceed. Edited by Flybuddy - 11 Mar 2020 at 3:17pm |

Be careful selecting "All" I found out very quickly that in addition to installing the new databases it also saves and restores the user configuration. The problem with the save and restore of the user configuration is it does the following operations in this order 1) Restores the last saved user configuration on the thumb drive 2) Saves the current configuration (read: the configuration it just restored!!!!) So if you made changes to your profile between the last database updates and you choose "All" you will lose your profile changes. Jeff
