Forgive me for not digging up the actual requirement, as I'm not sure if it is the annunciator location or the actual GPS installation location, but with the VLOC, GPS, HDG annunciators in the upper right hand corner of the IDF540 will these units still meet the installation requirements that Garmin had for the annunciator in the lower left corner for w.r.t. the pilot's line of sight?
IIRC some Beech products were just out view and required a remote annuncation of VLOC/GPS when coupled to a something like a King HSI. So two questions: 1. If the plane did not require the annunciation under the Garmin installation requirements, will one be needed from Avidyne (if installed in the same location)? 2. If the remote annunciator was needed and installed, obviously Garmin lacked the HDG annuncation, will a new annunciator with HDG mode be required or provided? |

Good questions, thanks.
The short answer is "I'm not 100% sure yet." It's an active thread inside our certification group right now before we have total confidence in the answer. We think we're okay based on the regs research we've done to date. However, there are a few potential unknowns within the FAA certification. We're in the process of talking to the authors of the FAA guidance to make sure we understand the constraints and intents of the certification authorities and have them agree with our position. This *may* take a few months to sort out where we have total confidence in the answer. Like I said, a very active thread right now in our cert group. So, that being said, we think the answers are: 1. No, we will not need any new remote annunciator if the installation did not previously require one. 2. No, we do not believe there will be a need for the HDG mode to be added to a remote annunciator. The technical reasons why we believe that to be the case are what we're about to run by the FAA cert authorities. |

BTW, the reason why we don't believe the HDG position will require a new or different type of remote annunciator is that the annunciators were all about indicating to the pilot what the primary nav source is. Heading mode (HDG) is not a primary nav source in that it is not something you show a CDI for or is "nav" in any conventional sense.
