So I've read the user guide and used the simulator and feel like I understand this function but in the plane I can't quite figure it out, maybe someone can help. I've got dual IFD440s and Portrait 5000 PFD/MFD in a Columbia. Anyway when flying VFR I'll often just be direct-to-destination. Using the sim and switching to OBS mode I can create a "radial" off of the destination airport the same as the runway heading and fly an intercept either manually toward the magenta line or in NAV mode with the autopilot. In the plane however the 440 doesn't behave that way I believe because of the external EFIS/CDI. How do I do this via the external EFIS? Perhaps it's the same with an Aspen which I know many people have... or maybe I have this all wrong. Here's my example from the simulator:

When I place my IFD into OBS mode, I can change the course (radial) by twiddling the CRS knob on my ASPEN, or by turning the "OBS" (top right) knob itself.
What happens when you turn the CRS knob on your CDI?

I'm having the same issue. After the switch to OBS turning the nob changes back to gps mode.
Cirrus with an exp 5000.is there some way to dial in a radial in gps mode? |

That's the problem, I don't see how to do that on an Entegra EXP5000 PFD. Twisting the IFD knob once OBS is selected doesn't do anything (like it does on the SIM). Perhaps a config issue on the IFD?

Use the left hand knob. You know, the one that you never use. |
