As I'm sure you know, Garmin has come up with a new line of transponders, the 345 series, that claim to output "legacy" GDL90 compatible traffic information via RS422. In this mode, would these transponders be able to display traffic on the EX5000 display? Since these products are so new, and not made by Avidyne, I wouldn't expect that anything has been tested yet, but it would be helpful to know if it is even possible that they would work.

I was about to ask the same question.
Also, 345's apparently can output TIS-B traffic data, morphed as old fashioned TIS for wideranging compatibility. I expect that the IFDs and EX500/600 (and ASPEN) should display that just fine.

Way too early to tell since they've only been on the market a month.

Perhaps not. Like the 345's, the L3 Lynx 9000+ outputs TIS and TIS-B traffic data. The 9000+ traffic reliably displays as TIS on a 430W just as did the older L3 Skywatch TIS box, but the same 9000+ traffic does not reliably display on an IFD440 without continuously repeating error messages. This has been noted in other threads, and Avidyne and L3 are reportedly "talking" about it. Perhaps the 345 is in some way more compatible with an IFD540/440 than an L3 box, but I would not assume that to be true without trying it out.

It's a month later, and I'm still looking for information as to whether the 345 outputting its information in GDL90 "compatibility mode" can display traffic on the EX5000 MFD. This would be very handy in my upcoming installation, and while many people believe it will "just work", it would be great to have confirmation from Avidyne that it DOES work, and any gotchas about configuring it. I knopw the 345 can display on the GNS430W; it would also be useful to display on an IFD440, since that may be a future upgrade.
Thanks! |

We don't know yet. We had never heard of the 345 until the public announcement. We are obtaining one and will test to verify all is as it should be but until that is done, we can not make a completely confident declaration. Our experience is there is no such thing as a standard Capstone (aka GDL90) standard. |

So, several people have tried driving their EX5000 MFD with a 345, but to my knowledge, none successfully. This appears to be true whether the 345 is in GDL90 "compatibility mode" or not. Garmin is saying it's an Avidyne issue that will require a software release, but I have trouble believing this, since the Lynx seems to work in "compatibility mode" without issues.
I know it's difficult to communicate effectively between competitors, but your customers need a useful solution, and that starts with you talking to them; please? |

We do talk with Garmin from time to time. They have been quite generous to supply us with interface information whenever we've asked over the last year which is refreshing.
In the case of the 345, it is not clear yet if they are correct. We will evaluate with a sample 345 to determine if that is the case. I can't repeat it often and loud enough in that there is no such thing as a universally adhered to Capstone/GDL90 standard. Every vendor who has implemented that interface has done so in a different manner which makes for a challenging exercise in combinatorics (once you've even figured out the implementation differences).

Thanks Jake. If you need anyone to help test this configuration, I'll have one installed within a couple of weeks. For now, that means driving the MFD with the existing Skywatch active traffic, and having the 345 display only on the 430W.

Thank you sir. I have one about to be installed in our test aircraft too to help validate the implementation.

Just a bump on this... I was wondering what the current understanding is of compatibility between
the 345 and Avidyne MFDs... Thanks much |
