500 Foot Aural warning at 4000 feet

   Recently, when I was flying cross country over flat farmland at 4000 feet (3000 AGL), my IFD540 sounded the 500 foot warning.  It was such a shock, it did not really register.  
Then, several minutes later, it sounded again.  I looked everywhere to see why.  I could not find a reason and it has not happened since then. 

I'm wondering if anyone has had this happen to them, or if someone has any thought on what might be the cause.
