I thought it would be nice for someone from Avidyne to explain here what is the synchronization logic / expected results from using the IFD100 together with the IFD4XX/IFD5XX.
I'm a new IFD440 user and love the combination of using it with the IFD100 app. Below is a picture of my local setup for training and testing using the IFD440 training app so I don't have to sit in the airplane all day long :-) From the start, I had some questions about what is synchronized and what is not when you update both sides offline and online. This is what I learned: - the AUX configuration is NOT synchronized, which makes total sense, as you may want your visual configuration to be completely different on each device. - User waypoints are sometimes synchronized, albeit I could not determine how this works and what is the logic behind it. I had mixed results making changes on both sides while they were disconnected. Sometimes when I connected the IFD100 to the IFD400 the waypoints were merged, sometimes not. Sometimes when both are connected and I make a change, it is replicated - sometimes not. - The same happened to routes. While working offline and online, sometimes route changes were merged / updated on the other side, until one day where it stopped working entirely (which I appreciated because it was creating a merge hell on my devices). What I do now which is perfectly acceptable and merge-safe is: a) prepare my route on the IFD100 while offline at home b) when on the plane, connect the 100 to the 440. The routes don't synchronize c) Activate my route from the IFD100. This instantaneously reflects on the 440 current route and waypoints d) If I want to save the route on the 440, I copy it from the current route, which creates a stored route on my 440. That is interesting. So, you are using the 440 training app to act as the IFD at home, so you can connect to it and work the IFD100. Then, you go to the plane, connect to the real IFD440, and go from there. Not sure that was ever intended, but an interesting application. Once when I was playing with the IFD100 app at home, I was struck that it seemed to have connected to something. Sure enough, it had connected to an instance of the IFD trainer that was running on the same network. * Orest |

This is exactly the scenario. Very convenient.
The IFD440 simulator is capable of communicating with the IFD100 exactly as the real IFD is.

Note that when you switch back and forth between the simulator and the actual IFD, it appears as though you need to re-sync, as the IFD100 throws a bunch of error messages and then needs to be rebooted. Once that’s done, the switch seems to work well for me.

Yes ... it used to work this way, except that now my IFD100 does not sync at all, either with the real IFD440 or the simulator at home.
To be honest, I prefer it this way. It was creating a synchronization hell across my devices, with duplicate user waypoints and routes. What I do now is enough to achieve what I needed from the start: - create a new flight plan at home on the IFD100, including custom waypoints - get to the plane and activate it - it IS transmitted to the IFD440 with the new waypoints - if I want to permanently store it on the 440, I copy it from the active plan into my route list. |

This is a neat idea-- I hadn't thought of using the simulator at home for this purpose.
What I can tell you is that there is (at least) one problem with the merge logic. Under certain conditions, if you have different FPLs in the IFD100 and the panel device, switching back to the IFD100 app when it's in the background will cause it to silently overwrite the active flight plan on the panel. I've reported this on the Avidyne FB group and to Avi support. I am told that the development group is aware of it but there is no timeline for, or commitment to, a fix.

Ouch. This explains why my plane turned left heading 240 yesterday in the middle of the flight :-)
What I haven't figured yet is why my flight plan syncronization stopped working about a week ago. It seems to me that it may be because I have hundreds of user waypoints, or I have reached some sort of internal limitation.

That's how I discovered the issue too. I'd encourage you to file a support ticket on this. To me, having my plane make uncommanded turns is a safety issue.
