The technician told us that when they upgraded our SR22 to R9.4, weather data from the MLB700 satellite receiver was disabled. This was very unfortunate to hear, as I was assured over the phone that we would be able to continue using satellite weather until Avidyne releases a compatible ADS-B in solution. Indeed, on the maintenance pages of R9.4, you can still tell the system to use the MLB700, but the setting seems to be ignored.

Is there any remediation for R9.4 users until an ADS-B in solution is available? Will an ADS-B in solution be available soon?

Tim,

I think your technician may of mixed a few details up. R9.4 did not simply disable your MLB700 satellite weather. WSI was the provider of weather for the MLB700. WSI discontinued that service in December of 2017. Below is a link to a small article explaining this.

Avidyne currently does have an ADSB IN solution for R9. If you are indeed updated to R9.4 you can use the Avidyne SkyTrax 100 receiver. This unit has been discontinued by Avidyne, but you can still find them on the used market. Below is a press release from Avidyne showing that the SkyTrax 100 is compatible with R9.4.

I am quite certain that the only ADSB IN solution for R9 is this discontinued SkyTrax 100 receiver. My suggestion would be to snatch one of those up off the used market if you can find one.

Yeah, I’m aware of the WSI discontinuation, but we’ve been happily receiving weather past that date, and on the phone Avidyne did tell us that it would continue to work for now.

Here’s what the shop said:

Quote Yesterday, while the aircraft was outside, I contacted Avidyne to send a refresh signal for your satellite weather. After 2 attempts, we remained unsuccessful. Avidyne tech support has been working on it from their end, and today they have given me some discouraging news.
The R9.4 software that is required for the remote transponder we installed in your aircraft appears to now DISABLE the use of MLB700 satellite weather. Nowhere in the service bulletin does it state this. From what they tell me, it ALSO sounds like it MAY disable the satellite radio, but this has not yet been confirmed. I have already voiced my concerns with Avidyne and suggested courses of action to take, but it is not something that will be resolved during this maintenance visit UNLESS new information is found. The configuration tool even lets us select the MLB700 as a weather source, so I don't quite understand this oversight. I completely understand if you have questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to voice them, and I will do my best to help you direct them where they will best be heard. Thank you for your understanding.

I know of SkyTrax but for whatever reason the Avidyne sales rep on the phone said my best option was to wait until the MLB 200 is released. Is anyone actually using a SkyTrax with any success?
