Planning HDX1100's and Avidyne GPS/NAV/COM - how m

   The title pretty well sums it up. Building a fiberglass airplane, lots of buried and/or internal antenna. 
I know I need a GPS 2020 antenna/receiver to provide GPS signal to my Dynon array, and plan to put it under the turtledeck near the front edge, which is high and a long ways from other metal items. I like that spot. But with the bird being IFR and having an Avidyne IFD440 in the panel, it too needs a GPS position source. 

Does it work OK  to port GPS position data from Dynon to Avidyne? 

Is it smart to run only one GPS position source given the IFR mission? Does anyone else run a second antenna for the Avidyne? Should I put it further aft of the Dynon or on the glare shield or under the cowling like the Van's guys favor?

Last, can we connect the GPS position data between the Dynon and Avidyne even when they both have their own antenna?

	I don't think the IFD440 will accept GPS position data from an outside device; you'll need to connect an antenna to it.

	I've got a glass bird as well (Long EZ) with a G3X, AV30E and the IFD540 / AXP322. 3 GPS antennas. Put 'em where you can. It also gives you some semblance of redundancy if one unit goes TU, you've still got GPS. I've got 2 under the instrument panel and the IFD antenna under the turtledeck behind to co-pilot.

	Billski, the Dynon antenna doesn't have a standard coax output. It converts the received GPS data stream into a serial stream and sends it to the Dynon HDX using (I think) an RS232 protocol with a proprietary sentence. The antenna also gets power from the HDX. So the Dynon GPS antenna can only be used by the HDX. GPS antennas are receive only, so theoretically you could put a GPS antenna farm all in one location, touching each other even. But some certificated installation manuals recommend staggering GPS antennas (not in line fore to aft, but one on the left and another on the right, for instance) and keeping them distanced from each other, all in an effort to keep a lightning strike from taking out more than one antenna.
